Northeast Iceland Development Fund

Northeast Iceland Development Fund is a competitive fund with the purpose of funding projects which support the objectives of Northeast Iceland Development Plan in three categories; business development and innovation, cultural projects, and start-up and operating grants in the field of culture. The fund´s operation is managed by the Association of municipalities in Northeast Iceland (SSNE).  Calls for applications are advertised once per year.

Application deadline is on October 18th 2023 at 12:00 (noon).

What kind of projects are eligible for grants?

The fund's grants fall into three categories:

  • Project grants in the field of business development and innovation
  • Project grants in the field of culture
  • Start-up and operating grants in the field of culture

In line with the regional development plan, there are special emphases:

Emphases for cultural projects:
Focus on environmental issues or social diversity
Emphases for business development and innovation projects:
Emphasis on improved utilization of the region's resource flows.

Applicants are encouraged to study the following information well to maximize the quality and chances of their applications.


Where do I apply?

  • Applications must be submitted electronically through the fund's application portal.
  • It is necessary access the portal using the electronic ID of the applicant.
  • Applications for legal entities (organisations and companies) must be entered using the electronic ID of that entity or Íslykill
  • It may be practical to set up the budget and funding plan in a spreadsheet before entering it into the application portal. Under useful links you can find a spreadsheet template (SSNEXCEL) designed for that purpose, with and without sample data.

What is the procedure if my project receives a grant?

  1. A written contract is prepared and electronically signed.
  2. An on-line allocation event will be held on December 13th, 2023.
  3. An on-line workshop for grantees will be held on Monday, December 18th, 2023.
  4. Projects must commence within three months of signing the contract.
  5. When promoting the project, the support of the Northeast Iceland Development Plan should be mentioned as appropriate. As a rule, advertisements of events or projects funded by the Development Fund should reach the whole operating area of SSNE. Here you will find the logo of Northeast Iceland Development Fund.
  6. Grantees may submit a Progress report as per agreement in contract.
  7. Grantees must submit a Final report upon completion of project.

Note that SSNE advisors must be notified promptly of any foreseen changes in the project plan and implementation.

All SSNE staff provides consultation for the fund's applications and projects. 

On-line workshops with Q&A will be held for applicants will be on September 18th and 20th in Icelandic, and on September 21st in English.  We encourage applicants to attend.
